Keeping summer day camp centers clean and sanitary for children is a challenge. It’s vitally important that facilities maintain high standards for cleanliness that go beyond compliance. The ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association) offers recommendations and tips for cleaning and maintaining summer day camps, and keeping them safe for kids.
Summer Day Camp Cleaning Tips
Create A Cleaning Plan. Your cleaning professionals should have a plan that is tailored to the specific needs of your day camp. The plan should designate daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks for different areas.
High Touch Surface Cleaning. Any surfaces that kids touch frequently through the day should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly. High touch items include doorknobs, light switches, hand rails, tables, chairs and restroom fixtures.
Use EPA-Approved Disinfectants. Your disinfectants should be EPA-approved and the cleaning crew should follow manufacturer instructions for dilution and contact time. Be sure that your staff is trained on applying disinfectants for maximum effectiveness.
Floor Care. Your floor care should include a regular routine of sweeping, vacuuming, and/or mopping to remove dirt and stains. Floor cleaning should include the proper cleaning agents and equipment, to address different types of flooring.
Restroom Hygiene. Keep your restrooms sanitary by regularly cleaning and disinfecting toilets, sinks, faucets, and door handles. Be sure to keep ample amounts of toilet paper, soap and paper towels available.
Kitchen and Dining Area Cleaning. If your day camp center prepares meals on site, kitchen and dining areas should be completely clean. Be sure to effectively clean countertops, sinks, and food preparation surfaces. Thoroughly wash dishes, utensils, and food trays with hot water and soap.
Outdoor Maintenance. Your cleaning service should thoroughly inspect and clean play areas and equipment. That includes removing debris, sanitizing equipment, and ensuring safe conditions.
Waste Management. Be sure to empty waste bins regularly and use liners to prevent leaks and spills. You should also secure trash cans and ensure that you are disposing of waste properly to prevent rodents and other animals coming into the area.
Air Quality Management. Cleaning services should be changing HVAC filters regularly, and promoting ventilation. It’s also a good idea to have air purifiers and fans available to improve airflow.
Training and Communication. Your cleaning staff and day camp staff should understand the importance of proper cleaning techniques, effective use of cleaning products, and safety protocols. Communicate with staff members regularly to ensure consistency.
